EVENT DESCRIPTIONS:

Circular Engineering: Electronic Repairs (Grades 6-8 morning, Grades 9-12 afternoon) series

Join us for an engaging 2-part workshop on electrical circuitry and electronic repairs, co-hosted with mentors from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UBC.

Part 1: Understanding Electrical Circuitry
Students will learn about electrical circuitry and the theoretical reasoning behind it. We’ll take apart electronic items commonly found in households which will provide a solid foundation in electrical concepts.

Part 2: Hands-On Electronic Repairs (Parents and Guardians welcome!)
Students are invited to bring an electronic item from their own home that needs repair. Together, we’ll take these items apart and learn how to fix them. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to join and learn about electronic repairs alongside their children, fostering a collaborative and educational experience.

The morning sessions will be held from 9 am to 12 pm for participants in Grade 6-8 on October 5th and October 26th.

Electronic Arts Jam: Game Design (Grades 7-10)

Calling all video game enthusiasts!

In partnership with Electronic Arts, a video game company, our event will explore the game design process. From brainstorming your game concept to crafting digital art, coding interactive elements, and integrating sound, the day will be focused on creating a game environment that unlocks your artistic vision via distinct digital tools.

Work alongside EA mentors and Geering Up instructors to begin the process of conceptualizing your own dream game!

DATE: October 19th, 2024

TIME: 9:00AM – 3:00PM

Engineering Design Challenge: Fall 2024

We’re taking it back to the classics for our Fall Engineering Design Competition!

Students in grades 6-9 will participate in a hands-on engineering design challenge focused on bridge construction. Guided by mentors, participants will design their bridges and simulate them on a digital simulation software.

The event includes testing the bridges for stressors in the simulation, allowing students to apply their research and problem-solving skills. This challenge emphasizes practical application of STEM principles, collaboration, and critical thinking as teams work through the entire design process from concept to virtual testing.

The challenge will be scaled with further context, location and environmental considerations which will be revealed on the day of!

STEnvironment Series: All Girls* (Morning) and General (Afternoon)

The STEnvironment Series is a two-series event focusing on 3D Printing and EcoCoding! Both days will focus on sustainability and environmental design to drive learning.

In Part 1 (November 30th), grades 5-8 students will explore the world of 3D printing, create basic designs, and develop their own unique creations.

In Part 2 (December 7th), return to take home 3D-printed masterpieces from the week prior and learn about EcoCoding. EcoCoding is the practice of writing computer programs that take less energy and are good for the environment. Join us to learn all about how to be a coder for the future!

STEnvironment Series morning sessions will be All-Girls* sessions. For General sessions, please register for the afternoon sessions.
