Volunteers and campers at Geering Up

Program Objectives

  • Facilitate STEM education in week-long camps or weekly clubs
  • Gain teaching and leadership skills
  • Work with a diverse team of like-minded individuals
  • Mentor youth in STEM

What are Junior Instructors?

Junior Instructors are high school or university students who lend a helping hand at our clubs and camps. Junior Instructors are invited to work closely alongside our instructor team to deliver and share STEM to youth in a hands-on and dynamic learning environment. This involves some curriculum development, assisting with lesson delivery, materials preparation, teaching opportunities, and more.

Junior Instructors can volunteer at one of the following locations:
UBC Vancouver, Richmond, South Surrey, North Vancouver, or Coquitlam.

There are 3 opportunities to join the team throughout the year:

January – April

Clubs Winter Session
Shifts run from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm on Saturdays.

July – September

Summer Camps Session
The minimum duration of volunteering is one week.
Shifts run 8:30 am – 3:45 pm Monday to Friday.

September – December

Clubs Fall Session
Shifts run from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm on Saturdays.

Basic Applicant Requirements

1. Currently in Grade 9 or higher

2. Residing in the British Columbia lower mainland for the duration of volunteering
*All successful applicants must complete a Criminal Record Check upon admission into the program.

STEM Leadership Program Junior Instructor Program
Term February - September (Optional until December)

One or more of:

  • January - April
  • July - September
  • September - December
Duration Volunteer for at least two weeks in Geering Up summer camps Volunteer for at least one week in Geering Up summer camps OR for at least one club term (Fall/winter)
Training Train in technical, professional, and teaching skills Train in professional development, teaching, and classroom management
Special projects Pursue a summer-long social development project with the aid of Geering Up and industry professionals Once per camp week, design and lead your own STEM lesson for the class.
