EVENT DESCRIPTIONS:
All Girls*September in STEM: Niche Explorations (UBC VANCOUVER)
Did you know September is packed with STEM celebrations? From International Programmer’s Day, to Math Storytelling Day, and multiple days dedicated to environmental protection in between — it’s a month that honors innovation, creativity, and care for our planet.
On September 27th, join us to celebrate the power of STEM — and how it shapes the world around us. This All Girls* event will feature four hands-on activities exploring Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, each spotlighting niche innovations from around the globe and future career pathways.
As we learn, build, and problem-solve, we’ll also pause to reflect. Each participant will create their own zine — a creative journal that captures what they discover, imagine, and dream across the day.
We’re thrilled to kick off the 2025–2026 Events season with this one-of-a-kind event — where engineers, artists, and changemakers come together!
*We use the words “girls” and “women” with an asterisk (*) to intentionally include students and stakeholders who are underrepresented in STEM fields. Cis girls/women and trans, genderqueer, or non-binary people are welcome at our All Girls* programming. For more information, visit our All Girls* page.

Research Room: Lab Day (UBC VANCOUVER)
On this Lab Day, we’re handing you the questions — and the tools to start answering them! From building a hypothesis to testing a theory, you’ll step into the process of scientific discovery.
Designed for students in grades 7–11, this immersive simulation will break down real differences between a dry and wet lab in Science, Engineering and Technology. Then, you will take on a collaborative research journey with your peers, and gain tools along the way that will strengthen your research skills. You’ll explore how scientists think, solve, and imagine — no goggles required.
Even more, you can expect to meet researchers from UBC who will share their lab journeys, hear about the role ethics play in research and if time allows, we may get to witness their lab spaces as well!
Ready to explore, test, and think like a researcher? We’ll meet you in the Research Room.

Citizen Scientists: Data in Drops (UBC VANCOUVER)
October can be rainy — but here in BC’s temperate rainforest, we don’t run from the rain. We explore it!
This October, we’re leaning into the season by becoming water detectives! In this hands-on event, students in Grades 6–9 will explore UBC’s campus, collect and test local water samples, plate bacteria, measure pH, and map their findings together. Along the way, we’ll discover how stormwater moves through our environment. Through each test and trace, we’ll learn how water holds hidden data about the spaces we live in.
From puddle to petri dish, every drop has a story! Let’s uncover it — together.

STEAMing Ahead: A Pro-D Day for Youth (UBC VANCOUVER)
October 24th is a Pro-D Day across all school districts — and while the teachers are sharpening their skills, students in Grades 5–7 are invited to spend the day with us at Geering Up!
Join us from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM for a full day of fun, hands-on STEAM rotations. We’ll dive into creative tech-based challenges indoors, engineering design challenges or head outside to explore the ecosystems right here on the UBC campus. What better way to experience UBC than on a bustling fall day — learning, building, and discovering alongside other curious minds?

Quantum Communicators (UBC VANCOUVER)
The United Nations has named 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology!
On October 25th, explore the future of cybersecurity and quantum science through hands-on challenges and creative storytelling. Join us for a dynamic day featuring an interactive encryption activity while we cover basics in coding for new learners, a guided quantum communication workshop where we map how quantum computing is relevant to various STEM fields, and a lunch panel with researchers and industry experts.
Special guest Dr. Charles Antoine, quantum physicist, author, and 2025 Scientific Outreach Ambassador for CNRS Physics, will help us reimagine how quantum science can be shared with the world. Dr. Antoine strives to make quantum physics accessible to all through creative projects like equiQuanto, a live performance blending science and visual art. He also co-directs the dual-degree program “Science & Design” between Sorbonne University and ENSCI, the Paris School of Design.
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Antoine to this event with the generous support of the French Embassy in Canada and the Institut Français du Canada. Come spend the day with Dr. Antoine and other experts!

Decoding Climates: Public Health x Tech (NORTH VANCOUVER)
In partnership with Bodwell High School, we’re thrilled to host our first STEM event in the City of North Vancouver!
Nestled in one of the world’s rarest ecosystems — the Coastal Temperate Rainforest — North Vancouver is a living lab for understanding how climate and environment shape our health.
On November 22nd, join us to explore how technology, public health, and climate change connect in your own backyard. Through hands-on activities, we’ll ask: How can we track weather shifts in air or water? How do we communicate public health risks, like heatwaves or heavy rainfall? And how might engineers design for a changing climate?
From data to design, we’ll dive into the tools needed to decode our environment — and imagine what comes next.

Engineering Design Competition (UBC VANCOUVER)
Mathematics and design collide in this year’s Engineering Design Challenge — but not in the way you might expect. Join us as we explore how the golden ratio has guided human structures for centuries!
In this challenge, participants will be tasked with designing and building a shelter — not just any shelter, but one grounded in both mathematical elegance and the human experience. Through hands-on exploration of geometry, structural planning, and the principles of human-centered design, students will prototype shelters for people with real-world needs.
Can you engineer a structure that balances form, function, and feeling? We’ll see you soon!
