All-Girls* Events

The All-Girls* Events in Kelowna/Vernon for the 2020-21 season have concluded. Please sign up for our Youth Programs newsletter to stay updated on all of the new, exciting events we have planned for the 2021-22 school year!

What are All-Girls* Events?

All-Girls* events are an exciting opportunity for girls to explore how they can use their creativity and skills to help the world. Girls will learn about engineering design and will enjoy fun, hands-on activities led by current university students. Additionally, participants will meet inspiring peers, mentors, as well as current UBC Okanagan students and staff who will share their stories and experiences.

All events in the 2020 – 21 school year will be offered virtually – you will need a device (laptop or desktop computer) at home in order to participate. Additionally, a small list of household supplies may be sent to registered participants 1 week before the session is scheduled (program depending).

Registration for each session will close on the previous Sunday. Space for each event is limited, so please sign up today!

This event will also bring together an exciting group of students and staff from UBCO to answer questions that you may have about future possibilities.

Robotics Today (Grade 9)

Thursday December 3rd, 2020

One of the best ways to find out what you are passionate about is to try it out for yourself! In this event, you will be able to see a robot you have created come to life in a fun and interactive environment. Robotics Today will feature how to program robots in a virtual VEX Robotics simulator. This event will help you discover the many ways in which robotics can help our world, and a panel of UBCO students will help you to answer any questions you may have about the journey into engineering.

Design our Future (Grade 10)

Wednesday Jan 27th

One of the best ways to find out what you're passionate about is to try it out for yourself! Design our Future features creative and fun ways to help our world from home, using engineering. Join our UBCO Geering Up Instructors, the UBCO Engineering department, and other Engineering student groups to learn how engineering helps make our world a better place, and to get insight into pursuing this field.

The Future of Tech (Grade 11)

Thursday February 25th

As technology continues to evolve in our daily lives, we are able to leverage new technologies for new applications. The Future of Tech creates the bridge and identifies the differences between electrical and computer engineering through hands-on workshops. Additionally, engineering students will share ideas and perceptions bringing you closer to this exciting domain.

Invitation to Create (Grade 8)

Thursday March 11th

By combining your creativity and design skills, you can innovate and create unique solutions to existing problems. At this event, you will be challenged with various activities whilst exploring the fundamentals of engineering. With a panel of UBCO students and staff, you will have insights from current engineering students about projects, student life, and their journey into UBCO Engineering.

Where do these sessions take place?

Each of the sessions will be facilitated through UBC Zoom. Participants will be sent the session link on the Monday prior to their session.

Do I need any special equipment to participate?

A web enabled device is what you need to attend the session. A webcam is a nice addition, but not needed. Please contact us at if you want to participate, but do not have an available device.

On the Monday prior to your session you will be sent an email containing a link to the UBC Zoom session, as well as a short list of household supplies that you may need to participate in the activity.

Who supervises the program?

Our programs are all lead by UBC undergraduate students in science/engineering. All programs are recorded for safety purposes. However, it is still the responsibility of a guardian to provide supervision for their youth during the program. For example, guardians must be available if their child needs tech support or first aid.

I have a boy who is interested in this sort of programming, can they join?

If you have a boy that is interested in similar programming, we highly encourage you to explore Geering Up and UBC Engineering events. As well, please be aware that we have an inclusive view of the word “girl” and we welcome trans*, genderqueer and non-binary folks interested in these workshops.
