Online High School Summer Courses

 

Geering Up’s Online High School Summer Courses are action packed programs all about STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). Each session consists of hands-on activities and are available for students going into Grades 8 to 12 (for the 2021/22 school year) and feature a variety of themes including Biomedical Engineering, Quantum Computing, JavaScript and more! This year, we’ll be offering nine weeks of programming (see schedule below). Courses are two-hours long a day and run for four or five days.

What are Online High School Summer Courses?

Our High School Courses offer a combination of new content and twists on crowd favourite activities such that courses differ from the content found in Spring Break Camps and Summer Camps 2020. Please note, however, that the content in a given named course will be the same between weeks. For example, if you register for Biomedical Engineering Jr in Week 2 it will have the same content as Biomedical Engineering Jr in Week 7. As such, please be aware that your child will repeat content if they are in the same course multiple times this summer.

Grade Levels: Grades 8-12 (varies by Course)

Materials Boxes: For the Biomedical Engineering and Integrated Engineering Courses, materials boxes will be shipped out a week before your course begins. These boxes will contain all of the required materials* that participants need for camp activities.
*Please note that boxes do not include technology components like laptops/webcams, etc.

Program Pricing: $144 for 4-day programs / $180 for 5-day programs

Engineering Courses

Biomedical Engineering

Pull on some gloves, put on a pair of safety goggles, and grab yourself a lab coat because Geering Up’s Biomedical Engineering course is back! The Biomedical Engineering Course combines aspects of anatomy, microbiology, medical technology, and engineering as we look at how biomedical engineers solve problems in medicine. In these courses, engaging and thought-provoking presentations are met with hands-on design activities meant to transport participants into the shoes of biomedical engineers.

Join this course if… you are interested in medicine, biology, microbiology, or engineering, want to see how engineers can work to solve problems in the medical field, or want to see how our lives are affected by the creations of biomedical engineers.

Integrated Engineering

Sharpen your pencils, slap on a hard hat, and get your designer brains in gear because Geering Up’s Integrated Engineering course is back! Integrated Engineering is the study of how the different disciplines of engineering can be used together to accomplish amazing things. As such, this course will not only focus on one discipline of engineering, but multiple! From engaging presentations on the types of engineering to hands-on design activities, our Integrated Engineering course is perfect for those high school students looking to flex their problem solving skills and get to designing!

Join this course if… you are interested in how engineers from different disciplines work together to solve complex problems, working on hands-on design challenges, and developing critical thinking skills.

Python Courses

For this camp you will require a laptop or desktop computer that uses the Windows, Mac OS, or Linux operating systems. iPads, iPhones, and Chromebooks will not work for this camp.

Python Level 1

Our Python Level 1 program is aimed towards newer programmers who have little to no experience with written code or have little to no experience with Python in particular. This is a great course for learning the basics of a written programming language and developing the critical thinking and experience that comes with learning to code in a new language.

GRADE LEVELS: Grades 8-12
MATERIALS BOX: No
Please note that this course will teach the same basics as our previous Intro to Python Course. As such, if your child struggled with the previous course, this is a perfect opportunity to review before taking Level 2. If they mastered the material of Intro to Python, they can try their hand out at Level 2!

Python Level 2

Our Python Level 2 program is aimed towards those programmers who are familiar with Python and have a strong understanding of the materials covered in Level 1. This course will go further into detail on how to develop programs using the basics they already know with new additions such as classes, user interfaces, and data structures.

GRADE LEVELS: Grades 8-12
MATERIALS BOX: No
We strongly recommend that your child has has completed either Intro to Python or Python Level 1 before enrolling in this course. Otherwise, they should have a very strong understanding of the basic structures of Python.

JavaScript Courses

For this camp you will require a laptop or desktop computer that uses the Windows, Mac OS, or Linux operating systems. iPads, iPhones, and Chromebooks will not work for this camp.

JavaScript Level 1

JavaScript Level 1 is an introductory course for those new to coding or new to JavaScript. This course will teach the basics of JavaScript from the ground up and get participants excited about programming in a language used globally for web application development.

GRADE LEVELS: Grades 8-12
MATERIALS BOX: No
Please note that this course will teach the same basics as our previous Intro to JavaScript Course. As such, if your child struggled with the previous course, this is a perfect opportunity to review before taking Level 2. JavaScript Level 2

JavaScript Level 2 is a more advanced course, offering the ability to build upon the skills learned in JavaScript Level 1 and develop richer, more in-depth programs. This course is perfect for those hoping to enter into web development or who want a strong toolbox of programming languages at their disposal.

We strongly recommend that your child has completed either Intro to JavaScript or JavaScript Level 1 before enrolling in this course. Otherwise, they should have a very strong understanding of the basis of JavaScript.

Quantum Computing Courses

Quantum Computing Courses

Quantum computing is a rapidly growing technology that leverages physics, engineering, and computer science to impact the world. In this course, participants dive into the mysterious and exciting world of quantum computing through games, interactive activities, and short videos. Throughout the week participants will engage in daily interactive sessions with guidance and support provided. By the end of the week, participants will gain an intuition for quantum computing and its applications in the real world.

Join this course if… you want to write code on a real quantum computer, develop your programming skills, and learn about new technologies!

HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER
VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

In addition to our summer courses, we offer the opportunity for high school students to volunteer with Geering Up via our Junior Instructor Program. This year, we are offering two versions of this program: The Junior Instructor Program (our classic version of the program) and a new option, the STEM Leadership Program (a new, summer-long experience). CAMP POLICIES

Please read the information below regarding our policies in place for courses this year.

We want to be as flexible as possible while also keeping programming costs down. When a customer cancels, we lose $10 in non-refundable credit card and registration fees. We never charge a fee for transferring off the waitlist. We hope this makes it as easy as possible to change your plans.

More than 1 week before your camp starts: $10 cancellation fee; $0 program transfer fee
After 8:00 AM on the Monday one week before your camp: $40 cancellation fee; $20-$40 program transfer fee (depending on program selection)
After 4:00 PM on the Friday preceding your camp: No refund can be given; No transfers can be made

*If Geering Up needs to cancel Camp sessions at any point, all registered participants in that group will be given a full refund or the option to tranfer to a similar program.
** Note that all times refer to Pacific Standard Time

Each of our online programs is led live by a pair of University Instructors and 1-2 high school Junior Instructors. We require Criminal Record Checks for each of our staff and all of our policies are reviewed by our board of advisers and comply with the standards of Actua, our national camps network.

As an additional measure of safety, our online camps are recorded for participant safety and to aid in an incident review process. Please note that these recordings are not available for distribution to participants, even in the case of a missed session.

However, our programs should never be considered as a replacement for guardian supervision, and it is still the responsibility of the guardian to provide adult supervision for participants similar to what participants would require while completing an independent homework project. In our programs we strive to create a classroom-like environment where participants are free to learn and grow through the challenges that the program will present. This means that we ask guardians to encourage their student to complete the activities independently of adult support where possible.

At Geering Up we strive to make our programs accessible to all youth. Our registration forms provide space for you to provide additional details about your student’s unique circumstances in order for our team to provide them with a great week at camp. Once your registration is submitted, our team will review your student’s details and may reach out to discuss how to best support your camper in our programs.

With our programs being online the strategies may involve adult support from home where our staff can only support virtually. If you have any concerns regarding the engagement of your child in our camps, please contact us at geering.up@ubc.ca.

  1. How will I know where to go on the first day?A link will be sent out to all registrants on the Thursday before the first day. In addition, the information email will contain instructions about how to minimize technical issues on the first day.
  2. Should parents be present for the sessions?In our programs we strive to create a classroom-like environment where participants are free to learn and grow through the challenges that the program will present. This means that we ask guardians to encourage their student to complete the activities independently of adult support where possible.
  3. Do I need any special equipment to participate?A web-enabled device is what you'll need to attend the session. A webcam is a nice addition, but not needed. For coding and computer-based programs, it is highly recommended that you have a laptop or desktop and do not use an iPad, Chromebook, or tablet.
    Additionally, participants registered in non-coding camps will have a box of most of the necessary supplies mailed to them the week before their camp begins. This box will not include technology components like webcams, web-enabled devices, etc.
  4. What do I need to do to set up for the first day?On the first day we'll ask guardians to join us for the first ten minutes as we make sure every participant is well set up.
  5. What does the online platform look like?We will be using UBC Zoom for our online programs. As mentioned, a webcam and mic are nice but are not necessary. Students are able to use a chat function or their webcam/mic to engage with the instructors and the other students in the class. The platform has an option to screen-share allowing our instructors to both share resources and help students with their projects.
