The CodeMakers Initiative

Codemakers is a specialty camp focused on Computer Science available for children in Grades 3 to 7. It exposes kids to computers in a way designed to spark interest in computation and develop their computational thinking skills. Potential activites include visual block coding, binary puzzles, creating basic games, computer graphics and animation, and building robots!

Codemakers: CS at Geering Up

Closing the Gender Gap in Computer Science

In previous years, registration data has shown that male campers register earlier in the year. As part of our goal to promote Codemakers programs to campers of all genders, Geering Up will be holding 50% of the seats for girls in our Codemakers camps until June 1, 2020. After this date we will fill the remaining spots with students from the waitlist.
If you are registering for a Codemakers camp, please select the ‘seat’ based on the gender of your camper. If you are registering a boy please choose a ‘general’ seat.

Codemakers Camp Themes

The Camp Themes that will be offered during the Summer 2021 camp season are: Computers and Me, Creative Coders, and Intro to Python. For more specific information on each Camp Theme, such as program schedules and pricing, please see the Elementary Summer Online Camps page.

Codemakers: Computers and Me

This one is for our Tiny Tech-ers! Join us as we explore the world of Computer Science – from exciting computer activities, to working on our very first block code, this camp will allow participants to run wild in the exciting world of Computer Science! This program will involve lots of introductory computer-based activities to teach the basic principles of computer programming and coding. No previous computer experience is necessary.

GRADE LEVELS: Grades 3-4

Codemakers: Creative Coders

This one is for our Tiny Coders! Get excited about the functioning of apps, or using virtual programs that help make our world better! This is our software-focused camp, where we explore the world of coding and computing technologies. If you’re excited about discovering how to code, then you’ll want to join fellow coders for a week of drag and drop coding projects! All skill levels welcome.

GRADE LEVELS: Grades 3-4

Codemakers: Intro to Python

Let’s talk Python – and no, we’re not talking about the snake! In this camp we will be exploring Python, a popular programming language used in web applications, scientific computing, and education. We’ll explore the fundamentals of becoming a software developer, or a junior engineer – creating cool codes and fun projects, ultimately creating a cool project that participants are sure to be proud of. This course will give you the baseline skills you need to start coding in Python. All versions of this program are for students with little or no experience with coding who want to get a start with Python.

GRADE LEVELS: Grades 5-6, 7

Geering Up is proud to be participating in Codemakers, a national program powered by Actua and Google. Actua’s network members at post-secondary institutions across Canada will empower 100,000 youth with critical computer science skills and prepare them for their future roles as innovators in technology.
